Recipe Spotlight: Sautéed Mustard Leaves with Garlic & Lemon

Looking for a delicious and nutritious way to enjoy leafy greens? This simple sautéed mustard leaf recipe brings bold, peppery flavour with every bite. Using Oya Foods’ dried mustard leaves, it’s a quick and easy way to add iron-rich greens to your plate — no chopping, cleaning, or wilting needed.

This dish pairs beautifully with pap, rice, or flatbread — and it’s ready in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons oil (sunflower, canola, or olive)

  • 1 onion, thinly sliced

  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1–2 small chillies, chopped (optional)

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce

  • ½ cup water or vegetable broth

  • 1 cup Oya Foods dried mustard leaves

  • Squeeze of fresh lemon juice

Instructions:

  1. Sauté the aromatics - Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until soft and translucent. Stir in garlic and chopped chillies (if using), and sauté for another minute until fragrant.

  2. Deglaze & Simmer -Pour in the broth or water to deglaze the pan, scraping up any brown bits at the bottom. Bring the liquid to a gentle simmer.

  3. Add the mustard leaves- Stir in Oya Foods’ dried mustard leaves directly into the pan. Mix well so the leaves soak up the flavourful broth.

  4. Cook until tender- Cover and simmer gently for 6–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mustard leaves have softened and most of the liquid is absorbed. If needed, add a splash more broth.

  5. Finish & serve - Season with salt, pepper, and soy sauce. Simmer for another 30 seconds. Just before serving, add a generous squeeze of lemon juice for brightness.

Serving Suggestions:

This dish is best served hot with steamed rice, soft pap, or warm bread. Add more broth if you prefer a saucier version, or let it cook down for a dry-style sauté.

Whether you’re reconnecting with traditional flavours or exploring mustard leaves for the first time, this dish offers a simple, nourishing way to enjoy one of Africa’s boldest greens -  no fuss, all flavour.
